History of Waterside Theatre
An Englishman relocated to Canada before landing in North Carolina in the late 1920s. Albert Quentin Bell set out to create a theater to host a play about America’s lost colony. He worked with Paul Green, the playwright, and a few directors to design the set and building. Within six months and with lots of labor support from the Civilian Conservation Corps camp, the building opened its doors. Initially, the Waterside Theatre offered backless bench seats for 3,500 people. There was no shelter from rain or storms. Fire destroyed the main stage and other areas of the theater in 1947, but it was rebuilt in less than seven days. A hurricane struck in 1960, but rebuilding took place so it could reopen in 1961. Now it stands as a testament to the hard work of the original designers who created a space for everyone to enjoy.

A single word, ‘Croatoan,’ was carved into a wooden post, which deepened the mystery of what might have happened. Though historians and investigators have looked into the fate of Roanoke’s ‘Lost Colony,’ no definitive answer has been discovered. Croatoan was the name for an island south of Roanoke, home to a Native American tribe. And so the mystery continues and takes shape as a performance that looks at the history and leaves more questions than answers to viewers.
