Avon is on Hatteras Island, in the center of the Outer Banks. Just 15 miles south of Salvo ,and close to Buxton, the town borders the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Kinnakeet went from the original Native Americans who lived in Avon, NC hundreds of years ago. When villagers came, the area was called Kinnakeet but changed by the US Postal Service in 1883 to Avon. Some people still refer to this name and some people  born and raised in Avon are still referred to as Kinnakeeters.

Avon has many events like Fourth of July but also surf fishing tournaments in the fall and spring. Restaurants and nightlife offer music in summer. Koru Beach Club is a large outdoor venue with summertime concerts going on many nights of the week in summer.

Avon has many points to access the beach from boardwalks at the end of their streets. ORV ramps are available at the town’s borders for 4WD vehicles and are free to access.
